Following the many questions which have appeared in the media on the issue of the Pitot probes in its fleet (the Pitot probe is one of the instruments which calculates the air speed of the aircraft), Air France wishes to make the following clarifications:
1)   Malfunctions in the Pitot probes on the A 320 led the manufacturer to issue a recommendation in September 2007 to change the probes. This recommendation also applies to long-haul aircraft using the same probes and on which a very few incidents of a similar nature had occurred.
It should be noted that a recommendation from the manufacturer gives the operator total freedom to apply the corresponding guidelines fully, partially or not at all. Should flight safety be concerned, the manufacturer, together with the authorities, issues a mandatory service bulletin followed by an airworthiness directive (AD).
The recommendation to change the probes was implemented by Air France on its A320 fleet where this type of incident involving water ingress at low altitude had been observed. It was not implemented on the A340/330s as no such incidents had been noted.
2)   Starting in May 2008 Air France experienced incidents involving a loss of airspeed data in flight, in cruise phase on A340s and A330s. These incidents were analysed with Airbus as resulting from pitot probe icing for a few minutes, after which the phenomenon disappeared. Discussions subsequently took place with the manufacturer.  Air France asked for a solution which would reduce or eliminate the occurrence of these incidents. In response to these requests, the manufacturer indicated that the probe model recommended for the A320 was not designed to prevent such incidents which took place at high-altitude cruise levels, and reiterated the operational procedures well-known to the crews.
In the first quarter of 2009 laboratory tests suggested, however, that the new probe could represent a valuable improvement to reduce the incidence of high altitude airspeed discrepancy resulting from pitot probe icing, and an in service evaluation in real flight conditions was proposed by Airbus. Without waiting for the in service evaluation, Air France decided to replace all its probes and the programme was launched on 27 April 2009.
Without making any assumptions as to a possible link with the causes of the accident, Air France speeded up this programme and reminded its pilots of the current instructions issued by the manufacturer to cope with the potential loss of airspeed data.

1)   Os defeitos de funcionamento das sondas Pitot do A320 levaram o fabricante a editar em setembro de 2007 uma recomendação de troca das sondas. Esta recomendação também se aplica aos aviões de longo-curso que utilizam as mesmas sondas e sobre os quais foi observado um número irrelevante de incidentes do mesmo tipo.
Vale lembrar que uma recomendação do fabricante dá ao operador a liberdade de aplicar a troca totalmente, parcialmente ou não trocar. Por outro lado, quando envolve a segurança, o fabricante, em conjunto com as autoridades, emite um boletim obrigatório (mandatory service bulletin) reforçado por uma “instrução de navegabilidade” (Airworthiness directive).
A recomendação de trocar as sondas é aplicada pela Air France nos A320 onde tais incidentes por ingestão de água a baixa altitude foram observados. Ela não foi aplicada nos A340/330 por não terem sido constatados tais incidentes.
2)   A partir de maio de 2008, a Air France observa incidentes de perda de informações anemométricas em voo em velocidade de cruzeiro nos A340 e A330. Estes eventos são analisados com a Airbus, como decorrentes de fluxo de gelo nas sondas, com a pane desaparecendo em alguns minutos. Discussões com o fabricante foram então estabelecidas, por ocasião de reuniões técnicas. A Air France pede uma solução para reduzir ou eliminar a aparição destes incidentes. Em resposta, o fabricante indica que o modelo recomendado para o A320 não foi concebido para prevenir os incidentes ocorridos em velocidade de cruzeiro em alta altitude e relembra às tripulações os procedimentos operacionais já bastante conhecidos.
No primeiro trimestre de 2009, os testes em laboratório mostraram que a nova sonda poderia trazer uma melhoria significativa ao problema de gelo em altas altitudes em relação à sonda anterior. Para confirmação final, a Airbus propõe uma experimentação em vôo, em situação real. Sem aguardar esta experimentação, a Air France decide trocar todas as sondas de sua frota A330/340 e este programa de troca é lançado em 27 de abril de 2009.Sem pressupor uma ligação com as causas do acidente, a Air France acelerou este programa de troca e relembrou as instruções em vigor emitidas pelo fabricante para fazer face à perda potencial das informações anemométricas.

A document filed in federal court this week by the Justice Department offers new evidence that former vice president Richard B. Cheney helped steer the Bush administration's public response to the disclosure of Valerie Plame Wilson's employment by the CIA and that he was at the center of many related administration deliberations.
The administration's discussion of Wilson's link to the CIA was meant to undermine criticism by her husband of administration allegations that Iraq attempted to acquire uranium, a matter that her husband had probed for the CIA, according to testimony presented in a 2007 trial.
A list of at least seven related conversations involving Cheney appears in a new court filing approved by Obama appointees at the Justice Department. In the filing, the officials argue that the substance of what Cheney told special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald in 2004 must remain secret.
No such agreement was reached between Fitzgerald and Cheney at the time of their chat, according to a 2008 Fitzgerald letter to lawmakers. But the Bush administration rejected requests by Congress and a nonprofit group for access to two FBI accounts of the conversation, saying the material was exempt from disclosure under subpoena or the Freedom of Information Act.
The Obama administration has since agreed that the material should not be disclosed. A Justice Department lawyer at one point last month argued that vice presidents and other White House officials will decline to be interviewed in the future if they know their remarks might "get on 'The Daily Show' " or be used as fodder for political enemies.
U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan expressed doubt about that argument. To counter Sullivan's skepticism, Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer said in a supporting affidavit to the new court filing that the department needs the ability to interview White House officials informally in future law enforcement investigations, and that if the Cheney interview summaries are made public, "there is an increased likelihood that such officials could feel reluctant to participate." Breuer served as special counsel to President Bill Clinton during the Whitewater probe.
The nonprofit group pushing for disclosure, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, responded yesterday with a statement that the Justice Department has subpoenaed such officials without difficulty in the past. "It is astonishing that a top Department of Justice political appointee is suggesting other high-level appointees are unlikely to cooperate with legitimate law enforcement investigations. What is wrong with this picture?" said Melanie Sloan, head of the group.

There, Mr. Biden, accompanied by aides and a handful of journalists – including George Stephanopolous, the host of the ABC program “This Week’’ – boarded the C-17, where the gleaming Silver Bullet, outfitted with comfy white leather couches and faux teak cabinetry, was strapped and chained to the floor of the plane, looking kind of like a captured spaceship.
Mr. Biden, who walked onto the plane carrying a football (no one was quite certain why) looked at new quarters admiringly. The Silver Bullets are used frequently by the Air Force to transport high-level officials like Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates who need privacy while flying in the big open belly of a cargo plane. Mr. Biden – whose previous trips to Iraq occurred while he was a senator said he had never been in one before. He spent much of the flight holed up with advisers inside; toward the end, he let reporters in for a peek and a few questions.
Mr. Biden landed in Baghdad after dark, and his official duties here will begin on Friday, when he will visit with General Ray Odierno, the top American commander in Iraq, as well as Chris Hill, the ambassador here, and several Iraqi leaders, including Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki.

As I was chatting with a new friend the other day, she asked me what I did for a living. When I told her I helped others get organized, she said, 'Oh, I don't have time for that planning stuff...it's just not fun. I'm a spontaneous person.' She then spent the remainder of the conversation telling me how she can't get anything done, that her house looks like a tornado went through it and that she's always exhausted from running around to and fro.

In her mind, she feels that planning is not fun. So, she doesn't plan. In the meantime, she chronically complains at the problems that could be resolved--if only for a little bit of planning.

Did you know that planning can actually help to make your life more fun and enjoyable? I can't imagine I'd have as much 'play time' as I do, without planning out my schedule.

When I plan my schedule for the week, I actually schedule in time for fun. No, I don't plan exactly what fun thing I'm going to be doing every single time. However, when I land on a 'play time hour' on my schedule, I can pick and choose whether I lounge in the backyard reading a book, go to the park and run around with my daughter or work on my latest scrapbook or sewing project.

By planning my cleaning and organizing schedule ahead of time, I spend no time doing things I don't like to do, such as searching for a lost bill, duplicating work or picking up laundry strewn about.

When I plan, I'm also anticipating possible problems. For instance, instead of expecting my daughter to not follow her chore schedule, I think ahead and reward her even better for remembering to follow her chore schedule on her own. This works out to my benefit, as most of the time, she does her chores without being asked. And I'm not always caught up in a struggle to get her to do it.

When my husband and I plan vacations, we make dinner reservations ahead of time, so we're not wasting time standing in line. We check restaurants, event locations, hotels, etc. before we go, so we're not there at the busiest time, when something is closing or caught without something we might need at that particular place. This ensures less sidetrips to Walgreens for forgotten toiletries and less 'I don't like anything on the menu' proclamations because we didn't bother to spend a few minutes checking out a restaurant's web site.

Planning allows for spontaneity. Even though I have a schedule that I abide by 95% of the time, I do allow for flexibility. I may not do a project or two at the time I originally scheduled if something comes up unexpectedly. Of course, I then re-schedule that project--and I can easily do so because I planned ahead to ensure my schedule wasn't jam-packed and that there was time for this sort of flexibility in the first place.

It's because of planning, that I've been able to reach my goals. It's because of planning, that I'm able to strive for new goals that I know I will accomplish. For me, planning is a way of life--and I wouldn't want it any other way. For me, planning IS fun.
